Bulldogs Score 34 Bench Points in Win Over Shippensburg, Harris and Odiong Named All-Tournament

Anii Harris and Beulah Odiong named to All-Tournament to conclude Conference Challenge

SHIPPENSBURG, PA -- The Bowie State women's basketball team got a 34-point showing from the bench on the way to a 61-52 victory over the Shippensburg Red Raiders on the road Saturday in the Conference Challenge inside Heiges Field House.

The Bulldogs (1-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Mia Smith added 10 points and three steals off of the bench and Beulah Odiong added eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals. BSU out-rebounded Shippensburg 42-31 in Saturday's game, led by Odiong's 10 boards. The Bulldogs also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.

BSU's defense held the Shippensburg shooters to just 33.3-percent from the field. The Red Raiders did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored five second chance points while Bowie State pulled down 31 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened
Bowie State started off strong, putting together a 13-9 lead heading into the second quarter. Bowie State capitalized on three Shippensburg turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

BSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 9:06 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Odiong, to increase its lead to 22-9. The Bulldogs kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 31-18 advantage heading into halftime. Bowie State forced four Shippensburg turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.

After intermission, the Bulldogs held on to its advantage and owned a 47-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.

Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 53-39 with 5:34 to go in the contest. The Red Raiders narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still cruised the rest of the way for the 61-52 win. BSU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
