Howard's Dagger Shot Leads Bulldogs Over Livingstone, 68-61

BOWIE, MD -- Robyn Howard knocked down a dagger 3-pointer with 1:08 left in the game to put Bowie State women's basketball team ahead 66-58, and the Bulldogs earned a 68-61 win against the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears at home Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action.

The Bulldogs (8-3, 3-1 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 21 points. Howard tacked on 14 points and Saniha Jackson chipped in as well with 10 points and seven rebounds. Bowie State forced 16 Livingstone turnovers. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Jayla Irvin led the way individually with two steals.

Jackson pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 20 second chance points.

How It Happened
BSU started out the scoring by going on a 14-0 run, culminating in a three from Howard, to take an early lead with 7:31 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-9 advantage. Bowie State capitalized on four Livingstone turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

Bowie State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:53 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Tsion Smith, to increase its lead to 34-21. The Blue Bears cut into that lead, but the Bulldogs still enjoyed a 38-30 advantage heading into halftime. Bowie State saw non-starters score six of its 17 total points off the bench in the quarter.

After intermission, Bowie State added to its advantage and owned a 53-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter. BSU turned 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points on the way to scoring 15 total points in the quarter.

The Bulldogs then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Bowie State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.

Looking Ahead
Bowie State will compete in the Palm Beach Atlantic Classic before the Christmas break on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Bulldogs will take on Palm Beach Atlantic on Monday (12/18) at 12 noon, followed by a matchup with Lynn on Tuesday (12/19) at 2 p.m.
