Bulldogs Defeat Johnson C. Smith, 84-71 for Inaugural Durant Family Foundation Education Day Game

BOWIE, MD -- In front of over 1,400 elementary school kids, the Bowie State men's basketball team had five Bulldogs put up double-digit points in route to a 84-71 victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls at home Monday for the Durant Family Foundation Prince George's County Education Game Day inside A.C. Jordan Arena. The education game featured  a total of 16 elementary schools from the Prince George's County Public Schools and one from Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

The win was the first conference victory for Bowie State this season. The Bulldogs (5-8, 1-3) had five players score in double figures, led by Kyree Freeman-Davis, who had 18 points. Joel Webb added 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Caleb Johnson chipped in as well with 14 points and eight assists.The Bowie State offense was very productive from deep, pouring in 10 threes on 21 attempts. Freeman-Davis was the most prolific shooter for the Bulldogs, draining four treys in the contest.

How It Happened
After falling behind 34-33, Bowie State went on a 6-0 run with 1:39 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Freeman-Davis, to take a 39-34 lead. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 41-39.

Johnson C. Smith kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 50-43 advantage before Bowie State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Johnson's three, to seize a 52-50 lead with 14:32 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 84-71 win. Bowie State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 45 total points.

» Anthony Carpenter notched a double-double for the Bulldogs with 12 points and 10 assists.
» The Bulldogs shot well from three point range, knocking down 10 of 21 long range attempts.
» BSU shared the ball well, recording an assist on 87 percent of made field goals.
» Carpenter racked up 10 assists for BSU.
» The Bowie State bench made an impact by scoring 27 points to its scoring output.
» Five Bowie State players scored 10 or more points.
» BSU turned the ball over 11 times while dishing out 26 assists.
» Freeman-Davis led the Bulldogs with 18 points.
» Bowie State got a team-high eight rebounds from Webb.
