Defensive Effort Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall to Lynn, 53-49

BOCA RATON, FL --The Bowie State women's basketball team held Lynn to just 15.8-percent from 3-point range in a 3-for-19 shooting performance, but fell 53-49 to the Fighting Knights on the road Tuesday afternoon to conclude the Holiday Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Bulldogs (8-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 17 points and two steals. Shanysse Alexander added 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench and Mia Smith added seven points. Alexander pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

Lynn did have 18 turnovers while BSU finished with 12. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Saniha Jackson led the way individually for the Bulldogs with two steals.

How It Happened

BSU then cut the Fighting Knights lead to 25-20 before going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to take a 28-25 lead. The Bulldogs proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 30-26 advantage heading into halftime. Bowie State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

The Bulldogs continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 44-34 with 1:01 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Bowie State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 14 third-quarter points.

Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jackson's layup, to grow the lead to 49-41 with 5:25 to go in the contest. Lynn then asserted control, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-0 the rest of the way to hand Bowie State the 53-49 loss.
