Bulldogs Rally from Second-Half Deficit to Knock Off Goldey-Beacom, 82-71

BOWIE, MD --The Bowie State women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 55-45 with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter to beat the Goldey-Beacom Lightning (1-7) 82-71 at home Tuesday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

The Bulldogs (5-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 27 points, six rebounds and three steals. Katerra Myers tacked on 14 points and Mia Smith helped out with 10 points.

Led by Myers' two offensive rebounds, BSU did a stellar job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points.

The Bulldogs defense forced 22 Goldey-Beacom turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Jayla Irvin led the way individually for the Bulldogs with three steals.

How It Happened
BSU fell behind 25-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs then cut the Lightning lead to 39-26 before going on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 39-31. GBC responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Bulldogs trailing 42-31 heading into halftime.

GBC continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 55-43 advantage before BSU went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Smith, to trim its deficit to 55-50 with 1:00 to go in the third. The Bulldogs continued to reduce the Goldey-Beacom lead, shrinking it to 56-52 by the end of the third quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.

Bowie State narrowed its deficit to 66-64 before going on a 10-0 run to seize a 74-66 lead with 1:26 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 82-71 win. Bowie State took advantage of 10 Goldey-Beacom turnovers in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of those takeaways.

The Bulldogs will begin conference play with a road trip to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on Claflin in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. Bowie State is 5-0 all-time against the Lady Panthers.
