Bulldogs Edge Shippensburg in 70-69 Victory

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State men's basketball team was able to hold on for a gutsy 70-69 victory over the Shippensburg Red Raiders (4-3) at home Wednesday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

The Bulldogs (4-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Joel Webb, who put together a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Deven Richmond tacked on 14 points and Caleb Johnson chipped in as well with 14 points, four assists and two steals off the bench. BSU utilized excellent ball movement in the contest, piling up 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Johnson dished out the most for the Bulldogs with four assists and Anthony Carpenter also contributed with three assists of his own.

Bowie State's defense held Shippensburg to only 40-percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened
Bowie State started off strong, putting together a 36-34 lead heading into halftime. Bowie State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 36 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Bowie State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 51-48 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mark Bradshaw's layup, to grow the lead to 57-48 with 10:47 to go in the contest. The Red Raiders narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still held on for the 70-69 win. BSU capitalized on 16 Shippensburg turnovers in the period, collecting 17 points off those turnovers.

Bowie State will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to face Claflin in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action, this will be the first CIAA contest of the 2023-24 season for the Bulldogs. The game is a tv game and will be aired live on the Grio or HBCU Go TV.
