PETERSBURG, VA -- Sophomore Anii Harris and redshirt sophomore Katerra Myers combined to score 25 total points - 61-percent of Bowie State's points - but the Bulldogs fell to the Virginia State Trojans 50-41 on the road Wednesday night in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Harris led the Bulldogs (13-11, 9-6 CIAA) with 16 points and two steals. Myers tacked on nine points and six rebounds and junior Seanice Lyons chipped in as well with six points and four assists. The loss dipped the Bulldogs to 5-4 in the Northern Division and now all three teams VSU, BSU and Elizabeth City State tie with the same record for second place in the North.
BSU held the Trojans (10-15, 6-9 CIAA) shooters to just 29.6-percent from the field. The Bulldogs also kept the Trojans top-scorer Raija Todd to 3-of-15 shooting and eight points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Bowie State went on a 5-0 run with 8:28 left in the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-13.
BSU offensive woes continued in the second quarter and faced a 21-15 halftime deficit.
Bowie State and Virginia State both put up 12 points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 33-27 entering the fourth as the Bulldogs scored three fast break points in the quarter.
VSU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 41-32 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Harris' layup, to shrink the deficit to 41-37 with 1:51 to go in the contest. The Trojans responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way. Bowie State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.
