Bowie State Falls to Elizabeth City State, 76-54 in CIAA Quarterfinal

BALTIMORE, MD -- In spite of a 60-percent shooting effort from 3-point range, the Bowie State women's basketball team fell to the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings 76-54 at CFG Bank Arena Thursday during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Quarterfinal round.

The Bulldogs had two players score in double figures, led by junior Seanice Lyons, who had 17 points. Sophomore Anii Harris tacked on 12 points and sophomore Saniha Jackson added five points, seven rebounds and three steals.

BSU forced 18 Elizabeth City State turnovers. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Junior Jayla Irvin led the way individually with four steals.

How It Happened
After falling behind 15-7, Bowie State went on a 5-0 run with 4:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from sophomore Katerra Myers, to narrow its deficit to 15-12. Elizabeth City State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bulldogs down 21-12 entering the second quarter.

BSU then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Irvin, to narrow its deficit to 21-18. ECSU responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Bulldogs trailing 38-27 heading into halftime.

Bowie State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bulldogs faced a 58-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.The Bulldogs took advantage of five Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.

Bowie State narrowed its deficit to 64-41 before going on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-46 with 5:03 to go in the contest. The Lady Vikings responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-54. Bowie State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

» The Bulldogs were incredible from long range, knocking down six of 10 three point attempts.
» BSU's defense forced 18 turnovers.
» Lyons led the Bulldogs with 17 points.
» Bowie State got a team-high seven rebounds from Jackson.

What's Next
Elizabeth City State (18-10) will face the No. 8 Johnson C. Smith on Friday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in the semifinals as the Bulldogs 2022-23 comes to an end at 13-12 overall.
