BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team got a 35-point showing from the bench on the way to a 61-51 win against the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings at home Thursday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Bulldogs (13-9, 9-4 CIAA) had four players score in double figures, led by junior Jayla Irvin, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Anii Harris added 12 points and redshirt freshman Khalia Turner helped out with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The win also ties with Lincoln (PA) for first place in the Northern Division at 5-2.
Led by sophomore Saniha Jackson's five offensive rebounds, Bowie State crashed the offensive glass, pulling down 22 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.
BSU's defense held the Elizabeth City State (15-8, 8-5 CIAA, 4-3 North) shooters to just 31.7-percent from the field, including 23.1-percent from the three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-2, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run with 7:01 left in the first quarter to take an 8-3 lead. Bowie State then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-10 advantage. The Bulldogs did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 14 points close to the basket.
BSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:07 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Irvin, to increase its lead to 22-12. The Lady Vikings cut into that lead, but the Bulldogs still enjoyed a 27-25 advantage heading into halftime.
After intermission, the Bulldogs held on to its advantage and owned a 37-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bowie State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.
BSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 53-46 with 3:02 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 61-51 win.
