Bulldogs Fall to Lincoln (PA) 66-58 After Halftime Lead

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team went into halftime beating Lincoln (PA) 98-8, 4-4 CIAA, 1-0 North) 32-30, but could not pull away in the second half as the Bulldogs fell 66-58 to the Lady Lions at home Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

The Bulldogs (11-7, 5-3 CIAA, 0-1 North) had two players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Jayla Irvin tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds and Robyn Howard added eight points, five assists and three steals. Irvin pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 18 boards and turning them into three second chance points.

Bowie State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 13 points in the paint.

How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, BSU went on a 7-0 run with 9:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Irvin, to take a 9-2 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-19 advantage.

The Bulldogs maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 32-30 edge. Bowie State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.

BSU then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Lions 48-45 entering the fourth. The Bulldogs took advantage of seven Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

LUPA kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-52 advantage before BSU went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 66-58 with six seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.

» The Bulldogs held the Lions to only 31.7-percent shooting from the field.
» BSU's defense forced 19 turnovers.
» Bowie State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 18 offensive boards in the game.
» Harris led the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points.
» Bowie State got eight rebounds from both Beulah Odiong and Harris.

Looking Ahead
The Bulldogs travel to Richmond, Va., to face Virginia Union on Wednesday Jan. 24. Tip-off begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Barco-Stevens Arena.
