ELIZABETH CITY, NC -- The Bowie State women's basketball team shot 50-percent from beyond the arc, but fell to the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings (13-7, 5-5 CIAA, 3-0 North) 77-66 on the road Saturday inside the R.L. Vaughan Center in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Divsion contest.
The Bulldogs (11-9, 5-5 CIAA, 0-3 North) had two players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 29 points. Robyn Howard tacked on 14 points and four assists and Katerra Myers added five points and six rebounds.
BSU's defense forced 14 ECSU turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Mia Smith led the way individually for the Bulldogs with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-8, Bowie State went on a 5-0 run with 2:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Harris, to narrow its deficit to 15-13. The Bulldogs deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 17-15.
Elizabeth City State kept adding to that lead, building a 38-28 advantage before Bowie State went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 38-33. The Bulldogs were unable to narrow the gap any further, but did not lose ground either and entered halftime with a 39-34 deficit.
Following halftime, Bowie State kept the Vikings from growing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Harris, to grab a 49-48 lead with 2:41 to go in the third. Elizabeth City State responded to seize a 54-52 lead entering the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
ECSU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 70-58 advantage before Bowie State went on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 70-66 with 32 seconds to go in the contest. The Lady Vikings responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-66. During that frame, BSU took advantage of five Elizabeth City State turnovers, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
