RALEIGH, NC --The Bowie State women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 53-43 with 47 seconds left in the third quarter to knock off the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons 65-63 on the road Saturday afternoon inside Emery Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (10-6, 4-2 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Anii Harris, who had 22 points and three steals. Jayla Irvin added 19 points and four steals and Katerra Myers helped out with 12 points and eight rebounds. Led by Myers' two offensive rebounds, BSU pulled down 11 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
The Bulldogs defense forced 23 SAU turnovers that turned into 18 points offensively, Irvin's four steals led the way defensively and individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
BSU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-15 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs continued to lose ground, trailing 35-21 at halftime.
Saint Augustine's continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-27 advantage before Bowie State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Irvin, to trim its deficit to 46-35 with 4:05 to go in the third. The Bulldogs continued to reduce the Lady Falcons lead, shrinking it to 53-43 by the end of the third quarter. Bowie State took advantage of five Saint Augustine's turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of takeaways.
Bowie State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Myers' layup, to shrink the deficit to 53-49 with 7:35 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept the rally going and took the lead for good on Irvin's three-pointer with 01:01 left for a 65-63 comeback victory. Bowie State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
