Women's Hoops Set to Compete in Exhibition at Old Dominion Friday

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's basketball team will travel Norfolk Va., to face the Old Dominion University Monarchs in an exhibition matchup Friday, Nov.15 on the road inside Chartway Arena. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Series 

  • This is the second meeting between the two programs since 2021.
  •  Monarchs hold a 1-0 record over BSU, as ODU won its last outing (70-29) Dec.8, 2021.

Last Whistle
The Bulldogs (1-0) secured it's first win of the season against California PA (2-1), 60-53 on the road this past Tuesday. Destiny Ryles led the Bulldogs with 24 points, four assist, seven rebounds, and three steals, while Mia Smith contributed with 13 points and three rebounds. To add on, Beulah Odiong recorded eight points, two assist, and three rebounds, as defensively Kristin Sterling led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks off the bench.

The Bulldogs held California (PA) to only 30.5 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from the beyond the arc. BSU defenders forced 23 turnovers, capitalizing on Vulcan's mistakes to score 14 points. Additionally, the Bulldogs outscored their opponent 26-18 in points inside the paint and never trailed in the second half.

About Old Dominion
Old Dominion, a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) enters Friday's exhibition 2-1, coming off a 60-48 win to Morgan State this past Monday. Kelsey Thompson led ODU with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Brenda Fontana added 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists. ODU held MSU to 18.75 percent behind the three-point line and had the bench unit contributed 28 points in the win.

The 2024-2025 Monarchs roster is composed of four returning players and 10 newcomers. Old Dominion were selected to finish third in the SBC Pre-Season Coaches Poll. En'Dya Buford earned a spot on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team and Kelsey Thompson was selected for the third team.

ODU is averaging 62 points, 43.7 rebounds, 11 assists, and 11 steals through three games this season. Buford leads the team, averaging 12.7 points and 4.3 assists per game. Defensively, the Monarchs are led by Mikayla Brown who averages 7.0 rebounds, while Buford leads the team in steals averaging two per game, respectively.

Looking Ahead
The Bulldogs will host Frostburg State University on Tuesday, Nov. 19 for its home opener. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the A.C. Jordan Arena.
