BLOOMFIELD, NJ --Mia Smith collected 22 points, but it wasn't enough as the Bowie State women's basketball team fell to the Bloomfield College Bears (3-2), 70-66 on the road Thursday evening inside Bloomfield College Gym.
The Bulldogs (1-2) were led by Smith with a season-high 22 points,seven rebounds,three assist, and three steals while Destiny Ryles helped out with 14 points, five assists, five rebounds, and two steals. and Beulah Odiong chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds.
Bowie State out-rebounded Bloomfield 48-36 in Thursday's game, paced by eight boards from Kristin Sterling off the bench. The Bulldogs also grabbed 23 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points.BSU outscored BC in bench points, holding a 13-7 advantage.
Bowie State did a great job disrupting Bloomfield shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Smith's two rejections led the way individually for the Bulldogs.Addationally, BSU dominated in the paint outscoring Bloomfield 24-18 in the loss.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-0, Bowie State went on an 11-0 run with 8:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Smith, to take an 11-6 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 21-18 advantage.
The Bulldogs could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-27.
Bloomfield continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-39 advantage before Bowie State went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 56-45 with 13 seconds to go in the third. Bloomfield countered and stretched its lead to 58-45 heading into the fourth. Bowie State took advantage of five Bloomfield turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Bowie State narrowed its deficit to 63-51 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Ryles' layup, to shrink the deficit to 63-57 with 4:28 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept their comeback going, but Bloomfield managed to hold on for the 70-66 win. Bowie State took advantage of five Bloomfield turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
