Bulldogs Drop to Palm Beach Atlantic 69-56

BOCA RATON, FL --Mia Smith collected 20 points, but it wasn't enough as Bowie State women's basketball team fell to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (6-5) which snapped the Bulldogs nine-game winning streak 69-56 inside the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (10-3, 4-0 CIAA) was led by Smith 20 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Destiny Ryles helped out with eight points,five rebounds, and four assists. To add on, Mayah Garner chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

Bowie State out-rebounded Palm Beach Atlantic 37-31 in Saturday's game, led by a season-high six boards from Ayasha Thomas. BSU controlled the game in the paint, outscoring their opponent 34-28. The Bulldogs capitalized on second-chance points, scoring 11 in the loss.  

How It Happened
After jumping out to a 15-11 advantage, Bowie State went on a 7-0 run with 1:41 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Smith, to increase its lead to 22-11. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-16.

BSU fought back to tie the game at 18-18 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Ryles, to take a 23-18 lead. The Sailfish then came roaring back to take a 36-29 lead heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs came out of halftime rallying and had constructed a 33-32 lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Ryles, to expand its lead further to 38-32 with 8:59 to go in the third. Palm Beach Atlantic responded to seize a 51-43 lead entering the fourth quarter. BSU played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.

Bowie State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 69-56. Bowie State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 13 total points.
