BSU Women's Hoops Host Wilmington For Final Home Tilt in 2024

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's basketball team will host the Wilmington University Wildcats at home on Monday, Dec. 9, in a non-conference tilt to wrap up the home slate for the calendar year. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside A.C. Jordan Arena. The game will be broadcast live on the Bulldog Sports Network.

Clear Bag Policy
Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium all of which are subject to search.
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
• Small clutch bags, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap
• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to: purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium. 

The Series  
  • This is the eighth meeting between the two programs since 2015. 
  • Bowie State is 3-1 at home and undefeated on the road against WILMU. 
  • The Bulldogs own a 6-1 record over Wilmington, as BSU won its last outing (65-40) on the road on Nov. 15, 2023. 
 
Last Whistle 
The Bulldogs (7-2, 2-0 CIAA) won its last outing against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe the Claflin University Lady Panthers (3-4, 0-1 CIAA) 53-45 in OT at home Saturday to extend the Bulldogs win streak to six. Destiny Ryles led the way for the Bulldogs 20 points, five assists, and season-high eight steals. Beulah Odiong added a double-double with a season-high 12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, while Kristin Sterling helped with seven points and two blocks off the bench. 
Bowie State defenders forced a program record 40 turnovers, significantly outperforming their opponents, who managed only 24.BSU took full advantage of CLAF's mistakes scoring 28 points off turnovers. The Bulldogs bench made a significant impact, outscoring the Lady Panthers bench 13-2 in the win.

Perfecting the Freebies 
The Bulldogs shoot very efficiently from the line when it comes to free throws. Ryles leads the team in free throws averaging 7.3 per game with a 77.6 percent efficiency from the line. Smith has a 90.5 percent efficiency from the charity stripe making 19-of-21 of her attempts. Freshman Sydney Anthony shoots 63.6 percent at the stripe and has made 14 of 22 tries. Bowie State shoots 72.9 percent from the line and has made 156 attempts out of 214 shots, averaging 17.3 made free-throws a game. BSU ranks third in the conference in team free throw percentage with 0.730 from the stripe.

About Wilmington 
The Wildcats, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), enters Monday's contest 0-9 overall, following a loss against foe Goldey-Beacom, 80-59 on the road Saturday afternoon in a South Division battle. Jasmine McDuffie led the Wildcats with 19 points, three rebounds, and two assists, while Aniyah Bond recorded nine points and seven rebounds. WILMU recorded 17 bench points compared to the Lightning's 11 in the loss. 

This is head coach David Cranston's first season with WILMU, as the Wildcats went 3-25 overall and 2-15 in the conference during the 2023-24 season. The 2024-2025 roster has six returners and six newcomers. The Wildcats were selected to finish sixth in the CACC South Division Preseason Poll. 
WILMU is averaging 48.8 points, 36.0 rebounds, 8.6 assists, and 5.3 steals through nine games this season. McDuffie leads the team, averaging 13.9 points per game, while Mya Nisbet averages 2.5 assists per outing. Defensively, Emma Brown leads the team in rebounds averaging 6.7 per game, respectively.

Looking Ahead
Bowie State will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to take on foe Winston-Salem State University, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross-division showdown Tuesday, Dec.17 at 5:30 p.m. on the road inside C.E. Gaines Center. The Bulldogs look for revenge after falling to the Rams in the opening round of the 2023-2024 CIAA Tournament.
