Ryles Records Triple-Double in Bulldogs 102-67 Victory against Wilmington

BOWIE, MD --Destiny Ryles went off for a triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 11 steals to lead the Bowie State women's basketball team over the Wilmington (DE) University Wildcats (0-10) 102-67 inside the A.C. Jordan Arena Monday evening wrapping up the home slate for the year.

The Bulldogs (8-2, 2-0 CIAA) had three players score in double figures, led by Mia Smith, who had 22 points and three steals. Ryles added her first triple-double of the season with 13 points, 10 assists and 11 steals and Sydney Anthony helped out with 12 points and four steals off the bench.

The Bowie State offense made hay from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 30 attempts. Smith hit three treys for the Bulldogs in the contest.BSU defense dominated racking up 29 steals to the Wildcats eight. 

The Bulldogs defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 37 Wilmington (DE) turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 59 points on the other end of the floor. Ryles' 11 steals led the way individually for Bowie State. BSU set a season record with the largest lead being 46 in the win. 

How It Happened
After falling behind 11-10, Bowie State went on a 10-0 run with 4:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Ayasha Thomas, to take a 20-11 lead. The Bulldogs then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-14 advantage. BSU capitalized on eight Wilmington (DE) turnovers in the period, turning them into 15 points on the other end of the floor.

The Bulldogs kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 3:11 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Smith, to increase its lead to 40-26. BSU kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 44-30 advantage heading into halftime. Bowie State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, BSU continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 48-32 before going on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Beulah Odiong, to expand its lead further to 60-32 with 6:34 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Bulldogs added 15 points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 91-48 edge. Bowie State took advantage of 16 Wilmington (DE) turnovers in the quarter, scoring 27 points off of takeaways.

The Bulldogs then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Bowie State took advantage of three Wilmington (DE) turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.

Looking Ahead
Bowie State will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to take on foe Winston-Salem State University, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross-division showdown Tuesday, Dec.17 at 5:30 p.m. on the road inside C.E. Gaines Center. The Bulldogs look for revenge after falling to the Rams in the opening round of the 2023-2024 CIAA Tournament.
