Bulldogs Protect Home Court in 73-70 Overtime Win Over Virginia Union

BOWIE, MD --The Bulldogs snapped a five-game losing streak against the Virginia Union Panthers (11-16, 6-8 CIAA, 5-3 North) in a 73-70 overtime win at home Wednesday night in a Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association(CIAA) Northern Division matchup inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

BSU (9-15, 4-10 CIAA, 3-4 North) had four players score in double figures, led by Caleb Johnson, who had 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kevon Corley tacked on 16 points, two steals and two blocks from the bench and Warren Mouganda added 15 points.

The Bulldogs forced 20 Panther turnovers in Wednesday's game. BSU turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. 

How It Happened
After falling behind 6-4, BSU went on a 5-0 run with 15:32 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Anthony Carpenter, to take a 9-6 lead. The Bulldogs slowed down offensively but still entered halftime with a 26-24 advantage. BSU relied on its three-point shooting in the half, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.

The Panthers proceeded to tie things up at 31-31 before the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Joel Webb's layup, to seize a 38-31 lead with 15:07 to go in the contest. VUU then fought back to even things up at 64-64 and sent the game to overtime. The Bulldogs got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 38 total points.

BSU then took care of business in overtime, outscoring VUU 9-6 to seize victory by the 73-70 final score.

» The Bulldogs held the Panthers to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field.
» BSU never trailed in the second half on its way to victory.
» The Bulldogs bench came alive by adding 22 points to its scoring output.
» BSU's defense forced 20 turnovers.
» The Bulldogs cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 10 offensive boards in the game.
» Johnson led the Bulldogs with 18 points.
» Bowie State got six rebounds from both Webb and Johnson.
