BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team dropped a 56-54 decision to the visiting Bluefield State Big Blue's (12-10, 7-7 CIAA, 3-4 North) on Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena for its home finale and senior day.
The Bulldogs recognized four seniors at the conclusion of the game featuring Jayla Irvin, Robyn Howard, Katerra Myers and Saniha Jackson.
Anii Harris led the Bulldogs (12-12, 6-8 CIAA, 1-6 North) with 21 points. Myers also tacked on six points and nine rebounds. Mia Smith chipped in as well with seven points and two steals off the bench. Led by Myers' six offensive rebounds, the Bulldogs crashed the offensive glass, pulling down 22 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.
The Bulldogs held the Lady Blues to just 18.2-percent from beyond the arc and 33.9-percent from the field but struggled offensively, shooting just 22.5-percent from the field and 0-12 from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, BSU went on a 9-0 run with 8:28 left in the first quarter to take a 9-5 lead. The Bulldogs then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage.
The Bulldogs maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 29-27 lead. BSU dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.
After halftime, BSU added to its advantage and owned a 40-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bowie State took advantage of three Bluefield State turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways but B-State cut into the Bulldogs lead in the game's final quarter for the comeback.
