PETERSBURG, VA --The Bowie State men's basketball team shot 58.8 percent from three-point range on the way to an 85-65 victory against the Virginia State Trojans (12-7, 7-3 CIAA, 1-3 North) on the road Wednesday in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The Bulldogs (11-10, 3-6 CIAA, 2-2 North) had three players score in double figures, led by Justin Morrisey, who had a career-high 34 points and three steals. Amare Wimbush tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds and Caleb Johnson chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench. BSU grabbed 34 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Virginia State's 33, led by Wimbush's eight boards on the night.
The Bowie State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 16 Virginia State turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Morrisey's three steals led the way individually for the Bulldogs.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-3, BSU went on a 9-0 run with 17:48 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Wimbush, to take a 12-4 lead. The Bulldogs then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 39-27 advantage. Bowie State got out and ran in the period, scoring 12 points on the break.
Bowie State kept its lead intact before going on a 17-0 run, finished off by Morrisey's jumper, to grow the lead to 58-33 with 14:56 to go in the contest. The Trojans narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-65 win. BSU capitalized on eight Virginia State turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
