WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bowie State women's basketball improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2019 with an 81-54 road victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs used a dominant second quarter and a strong finish to pull away, outrebounding the Firebirds 45-35 and outscoring them 36-22 in the paint.
UDC opened the game with early momentum, jumping out to a 15-7 lead late in the first quarter. Sydney Anthony cut into the deficit with a three-pointer in the closing seconds, but the Firebirds held a 17-11 advantage after one.
The Bulldogs flipped the game in the second quarter, outscoring UDC 26-8. Jada Bouknight ignited a 13-0 run with back-to-back layups to give Bowie State its first lead. Afia Owusu-Mensah added a fastbreak layup that stretched the advantage to 10, while Mayah Garner closed the half with a three-point play to send BSU into halftime up 37-25.
The Bulldogs continued its strong play in the third, holding UDC to 3-of-16 shooting. Mia Smith sparked the offense with a jumper and a fastbreak layup to push the lead to double digits. Anthony added six points in the period, and BSU carried a 53-34 lead into the fourth.
Bowie State sealed the win with a 28-point fourth quarter, highlighted by Owusu-Mensah's long-range shooting. Malaka Cobb knocked down a three-pointer and added free throws to help extend the lead to as many as 30 with just over a minute remaining.
