BALTIMORE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team (19-12) put up a fierce battle but ultimately fell short, 63-59, against Virginia State (23-5) in the semifinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament at CFG Bank Arena on Friday afternoon.
Destiny Ryles delivered an electrifying performance with 29 points and two steals, while Beulah Odiong contributed nine points and dominated the boards with 15 rebounds. Ayasha Thomas added eight points and three steals off the bench.
The Bulldogs were relentless on the glass, out-rebounding Virginia State 39-25, with Odiong leading the charge. They also secured 18 offensive rebounds, converting them into 16 second-chance points. Bowie State capitalized in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 paint points while also forcing 14 turnovers. Thomas' three steals led the defensive effort.
How It Happened
Bowie State came out strong, scoring 13 points in the first quarter and matching Virginia State's intensity. However, the Trojans took advantage of fast-break opportunities and efficient shooting to lead 34-28 at halftime. The Bulldogs responded in the third quarter, outscoring Virginia State 16-9 to pull within one point at 44-43 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Bowie State briefly took the lead but struggled with turnovers and Virginia State's defensive pressure. The Trojans regained control with key baskets down the stretch, outscoring BSU 20-15 in the final frame to secure the win.
