Smith’s Season-High 24 Points Lead Bulldogs to 71–54 Road Win

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The Bowie State women's basketball team showcased its defensive identity on the road, forcing turnovers and converting them into points to secure a 71–54 CIAA victory over Elizabeth City State on Thursday night inside R.L. Vaughan Center.

The Bulldogs (13-7, 6-5 CIAA, 4-1 North) recorded 17 steals and turned 25 Lady Vikings turnovers into 33 points, controlling the tempo from start to finish.

Bowie State set the tone early, using defensive stops to fuel a fast start. After settling in offensively, they forced eight first-quarter turnovers and closed the period on a run to take a 17–10 lead. Mia Smith and Malaka Cobb sparked the early momentum, capitalizing on fast-break opportunities as Bowie State established control.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the second quarter with continued defensive pressure. Jada Bouknight converted a steal into a layup, while Smith and Cobb each knocked down 3-pointers to stretch the margin. Smith closed the half with a triple in the final seconds, sending BSU into the locker room with a 38–20 advantage.

Bowie State delivered its strongest stretch in the third quarter, outscoring ECSU 28–20. Smith led the charge with a season-high 24 points, scoring from all three levels, while Gabrielle Clary provided a spark with a late 3-pointer. Chaniya Taylor helped facilitate the offense as the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 66–40 entering the final frame.

The Lady Vikings increased their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, but BSU remained composed. Cobb added a timely layup, and the Bulldogs closed out the game with key rebounds and defensive stops to seal the 71–54 road win.
