RICHMOND, VA - The Bowie State women's tennis team (0-8, 0-7 CIAA) fell to Virginia Union, 4-2, on Tuesday at Battery Park. The Bulldogs opened strong by securing the doubles point but were unable to hold off the Lady Panthers' rally in singles play.
Bowie State claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.
Nakari Blunt and
Payton Swinton earned a 6-3 win over Briana Velinor and Madison Hill at the top spot, while
Mil'lanni Marte and
Daisy Pentorn followed with a 6-2 victory against Maya Mercer and Marianna Brooks at No. 3. Virginia Union's Andrea Sonjurjo and Bethany Himalaya defeated
Asia Johnson and
Verneice Herndon, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, VUU responded by winning four of the five completed matches. Velinor defeated Herndon 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to even the score. Swinton delivered BSU's lone singles victory, posting a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Sonjurjo at No. 3.
The Lady Panthers regained control with wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Himalaya topped Johnson 6-4, 6-0, Mercer defeated Marte 6-0, 6-4 and Brooks secured the deciding point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Pentorn.
The No. 1 singles match between Blunt and Hill went unfinished, with Hill leading 6-1 and the second set tied at 5-5 at the time of the match decision.
