BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State women's tennis team (2-14, 0-12 CIAA, 0-7 North) suffered a pair of 4-2 losses to Virginia Union in a CIAA divisional doubleheader on Tuesday at the BSU Tennis Complex.
In the opening match, the Lady Panthers claimed the doubles point with wins across all three flights.
Nakari Blunt and
Payton Swinton fell 6-1 at No. 1, while
Asia Johnson and
Verneice Herndon dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 2.
Mil'lanni Marte and
Daisy Pentorn were defeated 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
Bowie State earned two points in singles play behind strong performances from Swinton and Marte. Swinton secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles, while Marte followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6. Blunt (4-6, 4-5), Herndon (1-6, 2-6), Johnson (4-6, 4-6) and Pentorn (2-6, 1-6) were each edged in their respective matches, giving VUU the 4-2 result.
In the second match, Virginia Union again took the early advantage by winning two of three doubles contests. Blunt and Swinton were defeated 6-4 at No. 1, and Johnson and Herndon fell 6-1 at No. 2. Marte and Pentorn secured BSU's lone doubles victory with a 7-5 win at No. 3.
The Bulldogs split singles play, but could not overcome the early deficit. Blunt picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot, while Marte delivered an 8-1 victory at No. 6. Herndon (0-8), Johnson (4-8) and Pentorn (0-8) dropped their matches as Virginia Union completed the doubleheader sweep with another 4-2 decision.
