  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Tony L. Matthews is a member of the Bowie State University Men’s Golf coaching staff who brings a lifelong appreciation for the game, a passion for mentorship, and a strong commitment to student-athlete development. He has supported Head Coach Paul Kerner’s efforts through youth and community golf initiatives, including the New Age Golf Academy, launched in summer 2025 and led by Coach Kerner as an evolving player-development initiative; the Big Lee Golf Clinic, a nonprofit initiative that introduces children in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding metropolitan area to the game of golf; and the Excel Golf Clinic, which supports developing and intermediate golfers as they build their skills, broaden their exposure, and continue their journey in learning the game.

He brings that same commitment to the BSU Golf program. Matthews is especially passionate about helping golfers understand the value of intentional and purposeful practice - developing not only their golf skills, but also the discipline, confidence, preparation, and mindset needed to grow on and off the course. He also believes teamwork and team camaraderie are essential in golf and in every walk of life, teaching individuals to support one another, communicate, and grow together. He particularly enjoys working with young people and watching their development through the game of golf. Professionally, Matthews retired from the federal government after a career supporting the intelligence community and national-security organizations in technology, leadership, program management, and professional development. He also served as a Brookings Legislative Fellow with the U.S. House of Representatives. Matthews holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering with an emphasis on Networking and a Master of Science in Computer Information Technology Management.
