Clyde Doughty, Jr. began his tenure as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Bowie State University (BSU) in January of 2015. In 2018 Doughty was elevated to Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. Prior to that he spent 38 years at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) as a Division II student-athlete and athletic administrator.

Clyde earned a scholarship to NYIT. During his basketball career, the Bears made it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Tournament in 1978 and 1980, losing in the national championship game to Virginia Union in 1980. After graduating Doughty became the Academic Advisor to student-athletes in 1982. In 1984, he was appointed as Assistant Director of Athletics, and in 1988, he succeeded Dr. William T. Lai as Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Doughty counts among his intercollegiate athletic achievements the enhancing of the NYIT’s athletic department’s organizational structure and stability and improving the academic performances of NYIT’s student-athletes. Upon his departure from NYIT, the athletic department boasted an overall GPA of 3.3. During Doughty’s tenure, the Bears earned numerous appearances in NCAA and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) post-season play. The men’s lacrosse team had captured the NCAA National championship four times, 1997, 2003, 2005 and 2008, the ECAC Championship in 2001 and appeared in the NCAA DII championship game on two other occasions, 1994 and 2002. The men’s basketball team captured the ECAC championship in 1995 and earned a NCAA bid in 2004, while the men’s track and field placed third at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1999 and second at the Indoor Championships in 2001. The men’s soccer program participated in the NCAA tournament in 2003, 2005 (elite 8), 2007 and 2013. The softball program earned a NCAA regional bid in 2008 while the women’s basketball team earned their first ever NCAA bid in 2013.  The women’s volleyball team made several NCAA tournament appearances; 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011 & 2013. The men’s and women’s tennis team earned NCAA DII appearances in 2013 with both programs advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2013.

Doughty earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and has two master’s degrees from NYIT; one in Human Resource Management and one in Human Relations. Doughty is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership at Bowie State University. Â
In January 2001, Doughty was appointed to a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council to represent the East Coast Conference (ECC). The council implements policies adopted by the NCAA Executive Committee and the Presidents’ Council, interprets Division 2 bylaws, and recommends the adoption of amendments and regulations regarding Division 2 athletics. As part of his Management Council responsibilities, Doughty served on two project teams; Graduation Rates (2002-2003) and the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee. Additionally, Doughty served on the DII Budget and Finance Committee (2002-2004), DII National Student-athlete Advisory Committee (2001-2002), DII Championship Committee (2002-2004), and the Honors Awards Committee (2001-2004).

In 2004, Doughty was selected by the National Athletic Directors Association (NACDA) as the Division II Northeast Region Athletic Director of the Year.

Doughty served on the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs Advisory Group within the Leadership Develop Unit. The group supported the NCAA staff in the areas of educational programs, health and safety and leadership development.

Since 2010 Doughty has served as the Master of Ceremonies for the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. The Forum is a national membership four day event during which selected student-athlete from all three divisions are exposed and educated on careers in sports, with a primary focus on collegiate athletics. Doughty has also served as a panelist at the DII Community Engagement Forum in 2008 and the 2013 NCAA Leadership Institute. Additionally, he served as a mentor in the NCAA/ADA DII Mentorship Program in 2012-2013.

In January 2013, Doughty was reappointed to the Management Council to represent the ECC. He served as the chair of the DII Identity Subcommittee, a member of the Nominating Committee, Management Council Subcommittee, Military Pilot Team and the liaison to the Minority Opportunities Athletics Administrators Association (MOAA).

In his leadership role at BSU, Doughty is constantly assessing the policies, practices and procedures of the department, seeking to improve the overall effectiveness of operations by reviewing and assessing current practices and implementing new measures that will improve the overall efficiency of the department. During his five years at BSU the Bulldogs have achieved success on and off the playing field. The women's bowling team has captured five consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships and earned a berth in the NCAA national tournament in 2018 & 2019. Men’s basketball captured the CIAA championship in 2017, while the women’s basketball program raced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2018. The football team has earned three NCAA playoff berths, 2017, 2018, & 2019, and captured the CIAA championship in 2018 & 2019.  Doughty’s number one priority is academics. He is focused on improving the academic performance of his student-athletes by working with the entire institutional academic community. In 2015 he developed the Athletic Academic Enhancement Program to support academic excellence.  In 2018 the AD’s Honor Roll was launched recognizing all student-athletes who achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or better. In 2017, the Bulldog Book Bank was created to support the educational needs of student-athletes along with Bulldog Mentorship program that pairs student-athletes with faculty and alumni mentors. Infrastructure improvements have been made to the James Complex with renovated locker rooms, an improved training room, renovation of the women’s softball field, the track complex and increased office space for coaches and staff. Doughty currently serves as President of the CIAA Athletic Directors Association, chairs the CIAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a member of the NCAA Common Ground Leadership team and is a board member of Return to Inclusion. Lastly, Doughty has developed the Bulldog Booster Club, which is the fundraising program for athletics that seeks to work with alumni, donors, and sponsors to develop relationships and partnerships.Â
