CLARION DEFEATS BOWIE STATE LADY BULLDOGS 72-60 IN SEASON OPENER

BOX SCORE

(CLARION, Pa.) Sophomore Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) tied her career-high of 19 points and senior Markeya Watson (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, MD) hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds but it was not enough, as the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs fall 72-60 in their season opener versus Clarion University.

Neither team shot very well from the floor in the contest. Host Clarion hit 23-of-58 field goal attempts (39.7 percent) but knocked down eight-of 20 behind the 3-point line (40.1 percent). Katrina Greer poured in a game-high 29 points and Bethany Koch added another 17 points to lead Clarion's scorers. Lizzie Suwala chipped in 11 points to go along with 14 rebounds and Sara Pratt ripped down a game-high 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Bowie State hit only 28.2 percent of their field goal attempts (24-of-85) and connected on 10 of its 17 free throw attempts. Besides Robinson, junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) was the only other BSU Lady Bulldogs player to score in double figures, netting 10 points.

The game was tied at 36 at halftime mainly thanks to 18 first-half points from Greer before Clarion used a 21-8 run at near the start of the second half to build a 13-point lead, 59-46. Bowie State (0-1) fought back closing the gap to five points a couple of times the last with 4:52 to play on a Lakisha Walker layup. But the Golden Eagles answered the bell closing the game on an 8-1 run Suwala hitting two key baskets including a layup 28 seconds after Walker's layup.

Clarion (1-0) beat Bowie State on the glass as well, outrebounding the Lady Bulldogs 56 to 48 and the Golden Eagles blocked seven shots.

Bowie State will face Edinboro (Pa.) at 4 p.m. Sunday (11/16) to close out their participation in the Clarion Tip-Off Classic and then open conference play – Tuesday (11/18), hosting Livingstone at 5:30 p.m.
