There was never any question who was the better team tonight, as Bowie State University dominated the defending CIAA Champions of Shaw University from beginning to end. The game featured on one tie (2-2) and saw Bowie State lead by as much as 21 (45-24) points in the first half.
The Bowie State defense forced Shaw into 10 first half turnovers (22 overall) and the visiting Lady Bears to 10-of-28 shooting (36 percent) in the first period. On the other hand, Bowie State made 18-of-36 first period field goals (50 percent), which included six-of-15 (40 percent) behind the arc. BSU pummeled Shaw on the inside, outscoring the Lady Bears 22-8 in the paint.
Shaw's field goal shooting continued to take a nose dive in the second half, as the Lady Bears hit just nine-of-31 from the floor (29 percent). Three-point shooting was null and void for Shaw with the visitors missing all ten of their second stanza attempts. Tanisha McGaughey (Norfolk, Va.) scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the final period, converting seven-of-17 field goals for Shaw. McGaughey also led the Lady Bears with 11 rebounds.
Bowie State's field goal percentage dropped to 36 percent in the final 20 minutes (10-of-28) and the Lady Bulldogs ended the evening making 28-of-64 field goals. It may come as a surprise, but Bowie State did not attempt one free throw in the final half of play.
Brittney Jackson (Laurel, MD, Laurel) was the only other BSU player to score in double figures with the sophomore scoring a career-high 13 points. Sophomore
Denisha Kenion (Ft. Washington, MD, Oxon Hill) and freshman
