JOHNSON C. SMITH HANDS BSU LADY BULLDOGS 62-50 CONFERENCE LOSS

BOX SCORE

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) Johnson C. Smith University ended the Bowie State University unbeaten conference winning streak, running to a 62-50 victory. The setback puts the BSU Lady Bulldogs conference record at 5-1 and 6-7 overall.

Bowie State's first half shooting percentage was almost as cold as the temperature outside a pumped up JCSU Brayboy Gymnasium. Bowie State jumped out to an early 14-5 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the first half before the Lady Golden Bulls charged back with an 11-2 run over the next 6 minutes and 32 seconds to tie the game at 16. Johnson C. Smith rode that momentum, closing out the remaining 7:05 with a 14-3 run and coasted into halftime with a 30-19 cushion.

The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs managed just seven-of-29 from the field (24 percent), one-of-10 behind the three-point line and four-of-nine at the free throw line in the first period. Compare that to 10-of-25 (40 percent) from the floor, two-of-five behind the arc and eight-of-10 from the charity stripe for the JCSU Lady Golden Bulls.

Bowie State began the second period with a 19-3 run to close the gap to 33-28 by the 14:20 mark. Johnson C. Smith (8-6 / 5-2 CIAA) pushed out to a double-digit lead (38-33) courtesy of a 5-0 run. BSU's Lady Bulldogs were able to trim the deficit to four (40-36) with just over 8 minutes remaining in the game. However, Terran Quattlebaum stuck a triple and Demetria Bell added an unconventional three-point play to extend the JCSU Lady Golden Bulls lead back to double-digits at 46-36. The visitors pulled to within four twice in the second half, 48-44 at the 5:05 mark and 52-48 with 3:19 left to play, but would get no closer.

Bell led four Johnson C. Smith players to score in double figures, tallying a team-high 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Other JCSU players in double figure scorers include Wendy Stywalt and Quattlebaum with 14 points and Tyra Breaux with 12 points.

Junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) notched her fourth 20 plus point game, dropping 21 (for the second game in a row) to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Freshmen Juliette Turner (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy) added nine points and four rebounds to the stat sheet and sophomore Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) contributed a half dozen points and rebounds for Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs.

Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs will remain in North Carolina and will next face the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday (1/17). Johnson C. Smith travels to St. Paul's – Saturday (1/17) for a 2 p.m. contest against the Lady Tigers.
