(Bowie, Md.) Bowie State University avenged an earlier season to Johnson C. Smith, beating the Lady Golden Bulls 53-43. Junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) scored a game-high 20 points and freshman Juliette Turner (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy) added 15 to the book to lead the Lady Bulldogs.  The win pulls Bowie State's overall record even at 8-8 and 7-2 in the CIAA.

Neither the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls nor the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs could get on track in the first half of play as both teams shot 28 percent from the field. Johnson C. Smith made just six-of-21 from the floor and Bowie State was only slightly better, making eight-of-31 from the floor. JCSU's Lady Golden Bulls were turnover prone in the first half committing 10.

After a 4-4 tie at the 15:51 mark, both teams went cold until BSU sophomore Brittney Jackson hit a pair of free throws to break a five minute drought. Bowie State took its largest first period lead with 6:33 left in the half, forging ahead for a 14-7 advantage. Johnson C. Smith maintained their composure and pulled to within one twice before heading into intermission with Bowie State leading 21-19.

Johnson C. Smith (10-7 / 7-3 CIAA) opened the second half with an 8-0 run until Lee stopped the run with a pair of free throws. A free thrown by junior Denita Hill (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy) and a lay-up by sophomore Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) pulled the Lady Bulldogs within one at 27-26 at the 15:22 mark.

After another scoreless period, Bowie State's Hill stole the ball for JCSU's Wendy Stywalt and scored a lay-up, shifting the advantage back to Bowie State. From that point, Bowie State would never trail again. Johnson C. Smith's continued to struggle in the final stanza, hitting eight-of-31 from the field. On the hand, Bowie State increased their field goal shooting percentage to 41 percent on nine-of-22 shooting.

Janai Jackson and April Smith led Johnson C. Smith in scoring with 10 points each. JCSU's Demetria Bell pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Kenion and Lee also led Bowie State in rebounds with 10 and nine respectively. Bowie State returns to action, Tuesday (1/27) with a CIAA Eastern Division matchup against Elizabeth City State at 5:30 p.m.
