(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University's Bulldogs rode a 10-point halftime lead to a 69-61 win over the
Elizabeth City State University Vikings. The much needed home victory improves Bowie State to 7-4 in the CIAA and 3-2 in the Eastern Division.
Junior
Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) and
Andrew Engel (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill, Colby C.C.) led the Bulldogs charge with 14 points each. Bowie State took a 10-point advantage (21-11) midway through the opening period and stretched that lead to 13 points twice in the first 20 minutes of play before heading into halftime with a 39-29 advantage. Elizabeth City State committed 14 first half turnovers which resulted into 17 Bowie State first half points.
Elizabeth City State (13-5) trailed by double digits for most of the second stanza but managed to cut the
Bowie State lead to five (59-54) with 4:25 remaining. However back-to-back scores by senior
Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, MD, Largo, Dodge City CC) on the Bulldog's next two possessions and pair of free throws by junior
Corey Stevens (Glenarden, MD, Good Counsel) pushed the home team's lead back
to nine and BSU would hold their advantage over the closing minutes.
Bowie State (10-8) won the battle of the glass, out-rebounding the Elizabeth City State Vikings 43-32. Crews pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a BSU career-high four assists. BSU's Stevens dished out a game-high six assists in the win.
Anthony Hilliard paced Elizabeth City State (6-4 in the CIAA and 1-3 in the East) with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds. DeJuan Morrison scored 15 points on six-of-12 shooting and Trent Bivens added 13 points in the setback.
Bowie State welcomes St. Augustine's College to the A.C. Jordan Arena – Thursday, January 29th for a CIAA East/West clash at 7:30 p.m.
