(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University snapped Johnson C. Smith University's undefeated, six-game win streak, beating the Lady Golden Bulls 63-49.
Sophomore guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, Md.) hit a three-pointer and connected on one free throw to give JCSU a small cushion early. Johnson C. Smith held a 17-9 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Golden Bulls offense went cold from there and Bowie State took control.
The Lady Bulldogs scored 16 unanswered points and went into halftime with a 27-20 advantage. JCSU's Lady Golden Bulls committed 17 first half turnovers and was outscored 12-4 in the paint. Quattlebaum had 10 points at the break, shooting 50 percent from the three point line (3-6).
Johnson C. Smith (6-1, 3-1 CIAA) trailed the entire second half; the Lady Bulldogs pushed their advantage to as much as 21 with three minutes remaining. Bowie State scored 38 points in the post, compared to just 18 to JCSU. The Lady Golden Bulls lost the rebounding battle 42-30 and finished shooting 36 percent from the field making 20-of-56.
Senior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) was Bowie State's top scorer with 15 points, followed by junior Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) with 10 points. Lee made a living at the charity stripe, making 13 of 16 free throws. Bowie State shot 48 percent from the floor (22-of-46) and 53 percent from the free throw line (16-of-30).
Quattlebaum had a team-high 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Senior guard Shakira Clarke (Toronto, Canada) and junior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, Md.) finished with six and five points, respectively.
Bowie State will take time off to prepare for first semester final exams before closing out the 2009 portion of their schedule – Monday, December 21st, hosting Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 2 p.m.
