Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, MD, Largo, Dodge City CC) recorded game-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Shaw Bears defeat Bowie State's Bulldogs 65-61.
Shaw (9-13, 6-8 CIAA) held a 14 point advantage at the 5:26 mark if the opening period and went into halftime with a 33-24 lead. Bowie State controlled the backboards in the first period, outrebounding the Bears 18-8. However, Bowie State had trouble shooting making just seven-of-18 from the floor (39 percent) compared to 10-of-23 from the field (44 percent) for Shaw.
Bowie State (11-11, 8-7 CIAA) cut the halftime deficit to 46-45 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game on a deep 3-pointer by junior
Charles Richardson (Suitland, MD, Suitland, Montgomery - Takoma Park C.C.) and Massey gave the Bulldogs their first lead at 47-46 with 9:53 left in the contest. BSU's Bulldogs maintained their lead until Shaw's Will Graham stuck two free throws to tie the game at 50 with 5:41 left to play.
A dunk by Shaw's Najee Edwards put the home team ahead by two but a Massey jumper knotted things up again at 52-52. From there, Shaw went on a 10-1 run and never let Bowie State get any closer than three points in the final minutes of the game.
Andrew Engel (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill, Colby C.C.) was the only other Bowie State player to score in double figures adding 13 points. Bowie State continued to control the glass, ending the game with a 43-26 advantage. Turnovers really hurt the Bulldogs as well with the Bulldogs committing 28 on the night.
Shaw was paced by Raheem Smith and Rodney Callwood with 14 points each. The Shaw Bears bench outscored BSU's bench 42-17
