Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) scored 18 points and junior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) added 17 to lead Bowie State University to a 77-67 win over Shepherd University.
Crews also added eight rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocked shots for the Bulldogs. Shepherd was led by freshman forward Chad Moore, who tied Crews for game-high scoring honors with 18 points. Senior guard Tyrone Roach added 15 points, while junior forward Dave Karlson was also in double digits with 10 points.
The Rams got eight points, six rebounds, and a game-high four steals from senior guard Derek Gallagher. Junior guard Jonathan Motichka also tossed in eight points.
Shepherd rallied in the second half to a take a 56-54 lead on Gallagher jumper with 8:34 left in the game. After Bowie State retook the lead, the Rams cut the lead to one point at 60-59 after a pair of Motichka free throws at the 5:31 mark, but the Bulldogs went on an 11-2 run to pull away for the win.
Bowie State (8-4) shot a season-best 59 percent (27-of-46) from the floor for the game, while Shepherd connected on 40 percent (25-of-63) of its field goals. Shepherd (1-9) forced 16 turnovers while only committing nine. Bowie State had a 32-29 edge in rebounds.
The Bulldogs knocked down 14-of-24 first half field goals (58.3 percent) and 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) over the final 20 minutes of play.
Shepherd and Bowie State played even in terms of points in the paint (24 each), but the BSU Bulldogs bench outscored the Shepherd's Rams bench 35-8.
Bowie State will come home just long enough to unpack and repack before heading south for two games in North Carolina. The Bulldogs will dual with conference foe Livingstone College – Saturday (January 16) in the Blue Bears New Trent Gymnasium, followed by a matchup against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University – Monday (January 18).
