(BOWIE, Md.) Rodney Callwood scored a career-high 38 points and collected 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Bowie State overpowered Shaw 77-66. The win stops a two-game skid for Bowie State and improves the Bulldogs record to 10-6 overall (8-4 in the CIAA).
Callwood's 38 came off of 12 for 21 from the floor and 14 for 17 at the free throw line. Bowie had four players in double figures with senior
Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) pacing the Bulldogs with 20 points to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
The first half was closely contested throughout with three ties and six lead changes, but Shaw's biggest lead was only one, while the Bulldogs twice held six-point leads, including the 32-26 halftime margin.
Shaw (10-7, 7-3 CIAA) was plagued in the first by turnovers and foul trouble. The Bears turned the ball over 18 times in the first, allowing Bowie State 16 points off the miscues.
In addition, Shaw was whistled for 15 fouls, leading to 20 foul shots by the Bulldogs. BSU committed only nine fouls leading to seven Shaw free throws. Through the first, Callwood had 19 points.
Little changed in the second half for Shaw. Callwood continued to be the focus of the Shaw offense and Bowie's depth and stringent defense kept the Bears from contesting the game.
The Bears committed only nine turnovers on the half, but Bowie State was even more efficient, scoring ten points off the miscues.
With 17:55 left in the game, Crews hit a jumper to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game at 43-28. While Shaw cut into the lead – trimming it to six points with 3:23 remaining – they never made a serious run.
No other Bear hit double figures in scoring on the night. Darryl Johnson collected ten rebounds, and Brandon Simms led Shaw with four assists.
In addition to Crews' 20, senior
Armond Hill (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook, Montgomery - Rockville C.C.) had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while junior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) chipped in 16 points and freshman
Dominic Milburn (Silver Spring, MD, Montrose Christian) added ten. Senior
Corey Stevens (Glenarden, MD, Good Counsel) led the Bulldogs with a career-high 10 assists.
