BOX SCORE
(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University sophomore
Travis Hyman (Annapolis, MD, Old Mill, Prince George's C.C.) recorded a double-double of 14 points and a school record 13 blocks in the Bulldogs' 72-64 CIAA Eastern Division win over Elizabeth City State University. The victory improves Bowie State's record to 11-6 overall, 9-4 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the Eastern Division.
"That was the best, single performance on defense that I have ever seen in my entire career", said first head coach
Darrell Brooks regarding Hyman. Brooks went on to say, "Travis' play completely changed the game on the defensive end for us ... They just weren't able to get the ball to the rim."
Hyman, the CIAA's leading shot blocker, fell just two rebounds short of a triple-double with eight boards
on the evening. Senior
Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) also added a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Despite the block party, Elizabeth City State's Vikings, who trailed 36-30 at the half, tied the game at 44 apiece on a Blake Price (Suitland, Md.) layup with 13:57 remaining. The Bulldogs then went on an 8-0 run for some needed cushion, only to have the Vikings pull within three (52-49) with 9:33 left to go. The visitors from Elizabeth City State refused to go away quietly and with two free throws by Marquie Cooke (Suffolk, Va.) at the 4:16 mark had clawed to within a point at 60-59.
However, the Vikings scored only five points the rest of the way while Crews scored six points in the waning minutes. As a team, Bowie State cemented the win going six-of-eight from the free throw line down the stretch.
Three Elizabeth City State players tallied double figures with Cooke leading the way with 16 points. The other two Vikings players to score in double figures were Paul Goldsmith (Fayetteville, N.C.) with 14 points and Quintin Spady (Norfolk, Va.) with 12 points.
Junior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) tied his season-high of 19 points to go along with a season-highs in rebounds (six) and assists (four).
