TURNER'S CAREER-HIGH 17 POINTS NOT ENOUGH IN BOWIE STATE'S 61-51 LOSS AT JOHNSON C. SMITH

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) Bowie State junior Juliette Turner (Atlanta, GA, John F. Kennedy) scored a career-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Lady Bulldogs fall 61-51 to Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls. The loss, Bowie State's third in a row, dips the Lady Bulldogs overall record to 7-6 and 3-3 in the CIAA.

The Lady Bulldogs led the entire first half, holding a six point lead twice (6-0 and 12-6), and went into halftime up by one, 23-22. Bowie State connected on 11-of-27 from the floor (41 percent) but did not attempt one free throw.

Johnson C. Smith's bench provided a spark in the first period scoring 16 points on 9-of-26 shooting (35 percent), which included two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

BSU's Turner scored the Lady Bulldogs first four point of the evening and went four-for five from the field in the first half and senior Brittney Jackson (Laurel, MD, Laurel) scored a lay-up for an early 6-0 advantage. Tyra Breaux answered the BSU run with back-to-back buckets to narrow the gap to two.

Of Bowie State's 23 first half points, 14 were in the paint and the Lady Bulldogs defense forced 11 Johnson C. Smith turnovers.

The Bowie State halftime lead grew to a game-high 11 points (44-33) with 7:20 left in the game, but the red hot Southern Division leading Lady Golden Bulls went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good at 45-44 at the 3:47 mark.

Johnson C. Smith (13-1, 6-1 CIAA) closed the game with a 16-6 run with Shavonda Price and Breaux taking turns from the charity stripe. During the final JCSU run, Price and Breaux combining for 9-of-11 free throws.

Breaux led Johnson C. Smith with a game-high 18 points and added a game-high eight assists. Terrica Price chipped in 11 points and Price wrapped up the night with eight points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Other than Turner, other double-digit scorers for Bowie State include junior Chanita Jordan (Philadelphia, PA, University City, North Carolina State) with 11 points and Jackson with 10. Jordan also recorded a BSU personal and game-high best five blocks.

BSU's Lady Bulldogs return home to host Chowan University Hawks - Saturday (January 22nd) at 5:30 pm.
