(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University used a 7-0 run to start the game and built that lead to a game-high 21 points en route to a dominating 101-83 victory over Chowan University. The win improves the Bulldogs record to 10-3, 5-1 CIAA and 1-0 North.

Free throws were plentiful for both teams in the first 20 minutes with Chowan and Bowie State getting a combined 44 attempts from the charity stripe. The Chowan Hawks made 14-of-22 while the Bowie State Bulldogs connected on 13-of-22.

The Bowie State first half lead first grew to double-digits at the 12:47 mark on a 3-pointer by sophomore Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, MD, Mergenthaler, Baltimore City C.C.). The foursome of Westmorland, senior Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.), junior Travis Hyman (Annapolis, MD, Old Mill, Anne Arundel C.C.) and sophomore Bryan Wilson (Upper Marlboro, MD, Riverdale Baptist School) combined to hit 16-of-27 in the first half. Bowie State held a 54-42 lead at the half, shooting 50 percent from the field (17-of-34), which included seven 3-pointers.

Chowan (1-14, 0-7, CIAA, 0-1 North) never got any closer than a dozen points at 67-55 with just over 13 minutes left in the game. As a team, the Hawks' field goal shooting percentage dropped slightly in the second half, falling from 43 percent (13-of-30) to 40 percent (12-of-30) in the second half and 42 percent overall (25-of-60).

Bowie State's second half field goal shooting percentage increased to 55 percent with the Bulldogs hitting 16-of-29 from the field and ended the evening shooting 53 percent (33-of-63). Free throws were a sore spot for Bowie State, making just nine-of-19 in the final 20 minutes and 22-of-41 overall.

Chowan's Hawks paraded to the free throw line as well, getting 47 cracks from the charity stripe, making 29 on the night.

Travis Williams led Chowan with 15 points which included a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Deandre Tyree and Charles Rhodes contributed double figure scoring, adding 13 and 10 points respectively. Tyree led the Hawks with a team-high eight rebounds. And Williams handed out a team-high four assists.

Bowie State was led by Vann with 22 points, hitting eight-of-13 from the field which included five-of-nine behind the arc. Westmorland scored 20 points and led the Bulldogs on the glass with a career-high nine rebounds. Hyman contributed 17 points and junior Darren Clark (Largo, MD, Largo, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania) chipped in 12 points to go along with nine assists.

Bowie State University returns to the hardwood Monday (January 24th), welcoming the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University to A.C. Jordan Arena for a 7:30 pm Northern Division matchup.
