CHEYNEY, Pa. - Cheyney (4-10) dispatched Bowie State (2-15) twice as the Lady Wolves rolled to 3-0 and 3-0 non-conference volleyball doubleheader sweep.
In the first match, freshman
India Mason (Greenbelt, Md.) continued her steady play, leading the Lady Bulldogs with eight kills. Sophomore
Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) recorded five kills in the loss senior
Symone' Jordan (Accokeek, Md.), sophomore
Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and freshman
Regan Taylor (Suffolk, Va.) added a pair of kills each. Sophomore
Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) was all over the floor, picking up a match-high 16 digs in the opener.
Breanna Joseph paced the Lady Wolves with 13 kills off 27 attacks. Kennetha Wallace was credited with 11 assists and led the team with 14 digs. In the first set, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 12-3 lead before taking the set 25-11. In set two, with the game tied at 15, Cheyney went on a 6-1 run and gathered momentum taking the set 25-20. In the third set, Akia Harris serve gave Cheyney a 4-0 lead to start the set and the Lady Wolves would never look back going onto victory 25-13.
In the nightcap it was more of the same as the Lady Wolves kept up the pressure. Joseph again paced Cheyney with 16 kills off 31 attacks. Wallace recorded 18 assists and 12 digs. Harris also added 12 digs. The first set was a back and forth affair until the Lady Wolves rallied late. With the score tied at 20, the Lady Wolves went on a 5-1 run to earn the first set. Set two was the Akia Harris show as the freshman scored the first 15 points of the set on her serve as Cheyney cruised to a 25-10 victory. Cheyney would close out the match in the third set. With the game tied at nine, the Lady Wolves scored the next four points to take control. The Lady Bulldogs battled back would never get any closer than two points the rest of the way.
Ngundam and Fisher were the teams kill leaders in match two, tallying four and three respectively. Ngundam was also responsible for eight kills in the nightcap Martinez led Bowie State in second match digs with 10.
Bowie State gets back into CIAA play this Thursday (October 3rd), hosting the Lincoln University Lady Lions at 6 pm in the A.C. Jordan Arena. This match was originally scheduled for Lincoln's Manual Rivera Hall, but due to renovations, the teams had to flip flop home dates.
