Bowie State Shakes Off Slow Start to Claim 68-56 Road Win at Washington Adventist

Denver Clyde Records Double-Double in Win Over Washington Adventist
Box Score TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs basketball team shook off a sluggish start after a two-week layoff and regrouped in the second half to defeat Washington Adventist University 68-56 on Thursday evening. BSU improves to 2-0 in the standings, while the Lady Shock dropped to 2-3 overall.

"It's not how you start but how you finish", said Bowie State head coach Renard Smith. "The difference in this game was our play in the second half and our overall rebounding."

Junior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) recorded game and career-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Junior classmates Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Alisha Burley (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 12 points each for the Lady Bulldogs with the dozen points being career-highs for both players. Castle also had season and a career-high eight rebounds.

The first half featured four ties and four lead changes. Washington Adventist's Nicole Derrickson scored the first points of the game but the Lady Bulldogs ran off six straight points to take the early lead. Bowie State held the lead most of the first half even though Washington Adventist was able to seize a six point cushion at 27-21 at the 2:13 mark of the opening period.

Fortunately the BSU Lady Bulldogs defense held the Lady Shock scoreless the rest of the first half, closing out the final 2:13 on 6-0 to go into halftime tied at 27.

Field goal shooting was dreadful for both squads in the first half of play. Bowie State made only 9-of-33 from the field (27.3 percent) and Washington Adventist was slightly better in terms of percentages (29.2 percent), going 7-of-24 from the field.

The Lady Shock kept it close to start the final 20 minutes, but the bottom began to fall out as the Lady Bulldogs built a 10 point cushion with 10:51 remaining in the game and a 44-34 lead.

Washington Adventist was able to put together a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to 49-46 by the 7:39 mark of the second half, but that's a close as the home team would get.

The Bowie State lead grew to double-digits two minutes later and the Lady Bulldogs never looked back after that.

Bowie State's field goal shooting improved slightly in the second half, going 15-of-39 to finish the night 24-of-72 (33.3 percent). The Lady Bulldogs dominated on the glass, holding a 58-37 advantage.

Three Washington Adventist players scored in double figures with Jerria Brown-McDaniel leading the Lady Shock with a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Brown-McDaniel also handed out three assists and recorded two blocked shots. Rashawnda Carter scored 14 points while Ebonie Ellison and Re'gene Watson added 10 points each.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Rutherford, N.J. on Saturday (November 23rd) to take on Felician College at 4 pm.
