ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Bowie State closed out the 2013 season with a 30-21 road win against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. The win was the third in a row for the Bulldogs and end the year with a 5-5 overall record and 3-4 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State ends the year at 4-6 overall at 4-3 in the CIAA.

Redshirt junior Keith Brown (Temple Hills, Md.) rushed for a career-high and Bowie State record 230 yards on 28 carries to pace the Bulldogs offense. Senior Jared Johnston completed 14-of-20 passes for 113 yards. Redshirt junior Khari Lee had a team-high five catches for 57 yards.

Bulldogs senior Eric Walters (Capital Heights, Md.) led the BSU defense with nine total tackles (seven solo) and junior Anthony McDaniel (Ft. Washington, Md.) and senior Oladimeji Layeni (Washington, D.C.) added eight tackles each.

Two other Bowie State school records were established as Johnston became the Bulldogs all-time leader in pass completions for a season 130. Redshirt junior Kendall Jefferson (Temple Hills, Md.) etched his name in the record book with 553 kick return yards in a season surpassing Marco Tongue.

Bowie State used a five-play, 58 yard drive opening game drive to take an early 7-0 lead. Jefferson returned the opening kickoff 39 yards to the Bowie State 42 yard line. Brown picked up 41 yards on BSU's first play from scrimmage to give the Bulldogs a first and ten from the Vikings 17 yard line. Four plays later, Brown found the end zone from nine yards out. Junior Mario Diaz-Aviles (Washington, D.C) added the extra point give the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead at the 12:21 mark of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs defense kept the Vikings out of the end zone on ECSU first possession of the game, only allowing a Brett Symonds (Temecula, Calif.) 18 yard field goal.

Brown punched it in again at the 1:38 mark, this time from three yards to give Bowie State a 14-3 lead heading into the second quarter. Brown needed just 98 rushing yards entering the game to eclipse 1,000 for the season and was well on his way.

On a fourth and one from the ECSU 44 yard line, Brown rushed for 19 yards to put him over 1,000 for the season. This marked the first time a BSU running back gained over 1,000 yards in a season since Nathaniel Queen (1,212) in 2006.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 21-7 with 5:55 left in the first half following a two-yard TD run by Brown and the Diaz-Aviles PAT.

The Vikings' Tyrell Houghton (Reidsville, N.C.) connected with Javoris Bryant (Decatur, Ga.) on a six yard pass and catch and ECSU's first touchdown of the after. Unfortunately for Elizabeth City State, Symonds' extra point was blocked by BSU's McDaniel and returned for a Bulldogs' defensive score by senior Darius Clair (Washington, D.C.) and a 23-9 lead at halftime.

Elizabeth City State's Petey Boone (Ahoskie, N.C.) rumbled 33 yards to paydirt at the 10:39 mark of the third quarter. Symonds added the extra point to narrow the gap to 23-15.

Elizabeth City State cut the deficit to 23-21 on a Houghton to Keith Strickland (Rocky Mount, N.C.) 33 yard pass and catch with 11:03 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion failed.

Bowie State responded with an eight play, 58 yard drive, capped off by a two-yard rushing touchdown by Brown. The Diaz-Aviles extra point gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room at 30-21.

The Vikings made it interesting down to the very end. With 2:39 remaining in the game, ECSU put together a 14-play, 90 yard drive only to have Bowie State defense come up big on a third and goal from the three yard line.

Senior Anthony Gary, Jr. (Temple Hills, Md.) intercepted a Houghton pass in the end zone for Bulldogs touchback with two seconds left on the Roebuck Stadium scoreboard, spoiling the season finale and Senior Day for the Vikings.

ECSU's Houghton threw for a game-high 274 yards, completing 22-of-39 and two touchdowns. Boone led three Vikings rushers with a team-high 127 yards and Strickland hauled in six receptions for a game-high 107 yards.

Malcolm Cherry was tops on the Vikings defense with nine tackles and Tyrrel Jones accounted for seven tackles.
