BOWIE, Md. – Sophomore
Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) hit a tough short jumper in the paint with 3.5 seconds remaining in the game to help the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs defeat the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds by a score of 69-66 on Tuesday evening in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena. The win pulls the Bowie State record even at 2-2 and also sets the UDC record at 2-2 overall.
Sophomore
Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) led the Lady Bulldogs in the contest with 20 points, tying her career-high. Sophomores
Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) followed with 18 points while
Jasmine Orsted (Dickson, Tenn.) notched a season-high 11 points to go along with five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Colston and Proctor tied for game-high assists honors with four each.
Senior
Alauna Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.) pulled down a team-best six rebounds and junior
Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) grabbed five rebounds to go along with six points.
Tajruba Baldwin-Kallore (Newport News, Va.) paced the Firebirds with 22 points and Iman Scott (Hagerstown, Md.) and a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday's loss. Tiara Goode (Brentwood, N.Y.) also recorded a double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. UDC's Tatyana Calhoun (Disputanta, Va.) fell just short of a double-double, contributing nine points and nine rebounds.
UDC led the majority of the first quarter until an Orsted 3-pointer with four seconds left shifted the advantage over to Bowie State at 12-10. Of Bowie State's 12 first quarter points, seven came via the Lady Bulldogs bench.
The Lady Bulldogs' pushed their lead to 23-13 by the 5:36 mark of the second quarter and extended that lead to a game-high 16 points (32-16) with 2:14 left in the period. Bowie State shot 42.4 percent from the field in the first half of play and took a 36-21 advantage into halftime.
Bowie State's defense held the Firebirds to just 28 percent shooting from the field in the first half as UDC managed to hit just 7-of-25, which included 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs defense also forced nine Firebird first half turnovers, which resulted in 15 points for Bowie State.
Still a 16-point cushion for Bowie State, 47-31 with under six minutes to play in the third quarter, a pair of Amber Bryson (Springfield, Va.) free-throws followed shortly thereafter by a conventional three-point play by Scott helped spark a 10-2 Firebirds surge that culminated in a three-pointer by former Lady Bulldog Myla Somerville (Loveville, Md.) to cut the UDC deficit to eight, 49-41. UDC would still trail by nine, 55-46 at the end of the three quarters.
A 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter gave the Firebirds their first lead since late in the first quarter, as Calhoun registered seven points during that four-minute stretch to put UDC up 56-55. The lead would then change hands six times before three consecutive free throws by Proctor put BSU ahead to stay with just over a minute left.
The Lady Bulldogs will break for Thanksgiving before returning to action in the A.C. Jordan Arena on Sunday (November 29th), hosting Felician College in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
