BOWIE, Md. – Hot second half shooting combined with Bowie State turnovers help the West Chester University Golden Rams continue its early season undefeated streak (5-0) after beating the Bulldogs by a score of 80-68 in non-conference basketball action on Wednesday afternoon. The loss, Bowie State's second in row, sets the Bulldogs record at 3-2 heading into the Thanksgiving break.
Bulldogs' senior
Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md.) tallied a team-high 13 points on the day for Bowie State. Senior
Miles Jackson (Silver Spring, Md.) added 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals while senior
Jordan Goodman (Riverdale, Md.) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Avery Brown (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) recorded a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Thomas White (Chester, Pa.) came off the Golden Rams bench to finish the afternoon scoring 15 points in 13 minutes of action and Josh Trumpy (Camp Hill, Pa.) and Malik Jackson (Lansdowne, Pa.) added 10 points each a piece.
Matt Wiseley (Emmaus, Pa.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, while teammate Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) dished out a game-high eight assists and added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals in the victory.
Bowie State shot 52.2 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of action, connecting on 12-of-23 shots. The Bulldogs drained 11-of-14 free throws in the first half (78.6 percent) and took a 38-35 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take its largest lead at 44-37 on a
Miles Jackson jumper at the 17:56 mark. Unfortunately Bowie State would get sloppy with the ball, committing several unforced turnovers that helped the Golden Rams.
West Chester battled back with a 7-0 run to knot the game for fifth time only to see Bowie State score the next five points to take a 49-44 advantage with 14:16 left in the second half.
Bowie State maintained its lead until West Chester's Brown stole the ball and drove to the other end of the court to tie the game at 53-all at the 11:16 mark. Suddenly the tide changed as the Golden Rams went on a 10-0 run that gave the Golden Rams all the momentum needed to close out the game.
West Chester had the hot hand in the final half, making 16-of-28 field goals (57.1 percent), which included 5-of-10 behind the 3-point line.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over a season-high 21 times and were out-rebounded 42-28. The last time Bowie State has less than 30 rebounds in a game was at Fairmont State (12/8/14). In that game, BSU accounted for 29 rebounds.
Bowie State will enjoy a little time with family for Thanksgiving before hosting the undefeated Fairmont State on Saturday (November 28th). The Fighting Falcons and Bulldogs will get underway at 4 p.m. in the Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena).
