Virginia Union Storms to 87-51 Victory over Bowie State’s Lady Bulldogs

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Union Lady Panthers showed why they are nationally ranked, rolling to the easy 87-51 victory over Bowie State University on Wednesday evening in VUU's Barco-Stevens Hall.
 
With the loss, Bowie State's fifth in a row, the Lady Bulldogs record moves to 9-9 overall, 2-6 in CIAA play and 0-2 within the division.
 
Leading Bowie State's offense was led by senior Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) with a team-high 20 points to go along with a game and career-high eight steals. Senior Jourdan Stanhope (Columbus, Ohio) added a season-best 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs trio of senior Alauna Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.), junior Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) and sophomore Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) grabbed four rebounds each.
 
Virginia Union (13-1, 5-1 CIAA, 2-0 North) was paced by Lady Walker (Cleveland, Ohio) with a game-high double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kiana Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a double-double of 17 points and a game-high 13 assists while Taylor White (LaPlata, Md.) tallied 13 points in the win.
 
Virginia Union opened up an early 17-6 lead over Bowie State by the games' first media timeout at the 4:38 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Panthers hit 3-of-7 triples which assisted in their early advantage. The Lady Panthers' distributed the ball well and their inside and outside game was clicking in the opening period and held a 30-10 advantage after the first quarter.
 
Bowie State trailed Virginia Union 42-23 at the half and were out-rebounded 20-14 and turned the ball over 13 times in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Bulldogs shot 34.6 percent from the field in the first half, making 9-of-26 and knocked down 3-of-4 free throws.
 
The Lady Panthers hit 16-of-31 first half field goals (16-of-31), which included 5-of-14 behind the 3-point line and VUU made 5-of-7 free throws.
 
Virginia Union continued to dominate inside in the second half, pushing their lead to 55-27 by the 4:48 mark of the third quarter. The Lady Panthers lead grew to 64-35 after three quarters.
 
In terms of team stats, the Lady Panthers held advantages in points in the paint (30-18), second chance points (32-12) second chance points (16-9 and bench points (25-14). Virginia Union ended the contest with a 55 percent field goal shooting percentage (33-of-60) and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) at the charity stripe.
 
Bowie State ended the game shooting 37.9 percent from the field (22-of-58) and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to host the Chowan University Hawks on Saturday (1/23) at 2 p.m. in Bowie State's A.C. Jordan Arena, weather permitting.
