BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University women's basketball jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter advantage in its home opener and went on to defeat Bloomfield College 61-51 on Saturday afternoon in the A.C. Jordan Arena. The win improves the Lady Bulldogs early season record to 2-1 while the Bloomfield Bears drop to 1-2 overall.

Junior
Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) led three Bowie State players in double figures with 12 points while fellow juniors
Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and
Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) recorded 11 points each. Freshman
Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with six points, two assists and two steals.
Junior
Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) and seniors
Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) and
Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) hauled down seven rebounds each. Jing tallied nine points and added a game-high three assists while Williams contributed six points on the afternoon.
Bowie State shot 56.3 percent from the field in the first quarter on 9-of-16 shooting and went into halftime with a 36-26 cushion at halftime. On the other side of the stat sheet, Bloomfield's Bears made 9-of-29 first half field goals (30.8 percent).
The Bears used a 17-8 third quarter run to get the visitors back into the game and a 43-44 advantage. Bloomfield made 5-of-14 third quarter field goals (35.7 percent) compared to just 3-of-20 (15.0 percent) for the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs flipped the script on the Bears in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponent 17-8 over the final 10 minutes to account for the final score of 61-51. Overall, Bowie State made 25-of-70 field goals (35.7 percent), which included 6-of-25 (24.0 percent) behind the arc and held a 49-37 advantage on the glass.
Bloomfield was led by the duo of Zhane Robinson (Newark, N.J.) and Tiana Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) with 14 and 12 points respectively. Robinson tied with teammate Ilysia Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) with eight rebounds apiece. The Bears were able to hold advantages in the paint (28-22) and bench scoring (15-14).
Bowie State returns to action on Monday (11/21) night, hosting Puerto Rico Bayamon at 7 p.m.
