Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Manhandled by Virginia Union Lady Panthers 91-55

BOWIE, Md. - This was not a matchup to remember for the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs, as they were left battered, frustrated, and exhausted after being dominated by the Virginia Union University Panthers by a final count of 91-55 on Wednesday evening.

Virginia Union (19-2, 11-2 CIAA, 6-1 North) made their presence known in the early going by implementing a full court press defense to prevent the Bowie State from bringing the ball up court with ease. Whenever the Lady Bulldogs were fortunate to get the ball to the offensive side of the court, the Lady Panthers featured heavy looks of the 2-3 zone to shut down many chances of scoring in the paint.

The clinic the Lady Panthers put on display was fueled by players such as senior guard Kiana Johnson (Chicago, Ill.), who lit up the Lady Bulldogs defense with a game-high 39 points. In the midst of her shooting prowess, she also dished out a game-high nine assists. Johnson wasn't alone when it came to showing great effort. VUU junior forward/center Lady Walker (Cleveland, Ohio) owned the paint, finishing the game with a double-double of 16 points and a new Virginia Union school record 27 rebounds, passing the mark of 26 rebounds that stood for 31 years. Walker and fellow forward/center Taylor White (LaPlata, Md.), who chipped nine rebounds, were able to use their 6'2" frames to block shot attempts and out-rebound the smaller Lady Bulldogs lineup.

Virginia Union controlled the glass, out-rebounding Bowie State 54-35 and held a 36-24 points in the paint advantage.

Bowie State guards Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) did their best to contribute on what was ultimately a lost night. The two sophomores combined for 29 points and nine rebounds. Colston led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and seven rebounds and Proctor scored 14 points in the loss. Sophomore Robin Heard (Waldorf, Md.) and junior Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) ended the evening with six rebounds each.

However, after never taking a lead in the game, the Lady Bulldogs committing 21 turnovers which translated into 27 Virginia Union points.

The Lady Bulldogs will look to regroup and snap their current 10-game slide, as they will travel to Murfreesboro, N.C to take on the Chowan Hawks this Saturday (2/13) at 2 p.m.
