Chowan Hawks Soar Past Bowie State Lady Bulldogs 70-54

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Chowan University women's basketball made a season sweep against the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs, rolling to a 70-54 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Helms Center. The loss drops Bowie State's record to 9-15, 2-12 in the CIAA and 0-8 in the Northern Division.
 
The Lady Bulldogs found themselves in a 16-5 hole after one quarter of play and trailed 37-16 at halftime. First half field goals were few and far between for Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs went 5-for-27 from the field (18.5 percent) in the first 20 minutes and converted 5-of-8 free throws.
 
Chowan's Hawks shot the ball well in the first half, hitting 54.5 percent of its field goals (12-for-22) and knocked down 11-of-18 free throws. The Hawks controlled the glass in the first half, holding a 25-11 advantage.
 
Chowan (18-6, 12-2 CIAA, 7-1 North) extended its lead to 51-20 by the 4:52 mark of the third quarter and allowed the Hawks to go deep into their bench.
 
Bowie State made a little run to start the final quarter but the deficit was just too large to overcome. Field goal shooting improved for the Lady Bulldogs in the second half to 32.8 percent (19-for-58) and Bowie State converted 14-of-20 total free throws (70 percent).
 
Sophomore Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) was Bowie State's leading scorer with 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer, sophomore Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) was held to eight points.
 
Sophomore Robin Heard (Waldorf, Md.) just missed a double-double, ending the contest with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds while senior Jourdan Stanhope (Columbus, Ohio) finished with seven points before fouling out.
 
Dhyamond Crenshaw (Glen Allen, Va.) paced the Hawks with 20 points and Alisha Mobley (Winchester, Va.) added 17 points in the win. Shaikeyla Jordan (Suffolk, Va.) contributed 15 points and Jordan Payne (Norfolk, Va.) recorded a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds.
 
Chowan dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Bowie State 46-24. The 24 rebounds were a season-low for the Lady Bulldogs.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return home to host Virginia State University at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (2/17).
