Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Fall Short 66-56 to Chowan Hawks

BOWIE, Md. - The Chowan University women's basketball team had a little trouble at Bowie State University on Wednesday evening, but had enough in the tank to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 66-56. The loss, drops Bowie State's overall record to 9-12, 2-9 in conference play and 0-5 in the CIAA North.
 
The Chowan Hawks (15-6, 9-2 CIAA, 4-1 North) shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from the 3-point line and a chilly 54.3 percent (19-of-35) from the charity stripe. Chowan's Alisha Mobley (Winchester, Va.) led both teams with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Dhyamond Crenshaw (Burke, Va.) tallied 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Jordan Payne (Norfolk, Va.) pulled down a dozen rebounds for the Hawks.
 
Sophomore Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) led the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs with 18 points while sophomore teammate Robin Heard (Waldorf, Md.) chipped in a career-high 13 points, hauled down 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Sophomore Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) contributed nine points and five rebounds and senior Jourdan Stanhope (Columbus, Ohio) scored eight points in the loss
 
Sophomores Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) and Jasmine Orsted (Dickson, Tenn.) scored six and two points respectively to round out the Bowie State scorers.
 
Bowie State connected 23-of-59 from the field (39 percent) and 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) at the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs attempted 10 3-pointers but missed all of them.
 
Chowan dominated on the glass, holding a 50-28 advantage but the two teams played even in the paint at 30-30. The Hawks also held advantages in second chance points (20-12) and bench points (18-2).
 
The Hawks took a 29-24 lead into the locker room at halftime and led by as much as nine (15-6) at the 2:34 mark of the first quarter.
 
Bowie State gained its first advantage early in the third quarter with a 6-0 spurt on a pair of Colston layups with a Heard layup wedged in between to give the Lady Bulldogs a 30-29 lead. Another Colston layup followed by a Jing jumper gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the game at 34-30 at the 5:36 mark of the third.
 
The lead would change hands three more times in the third quarter and the Hawks and Lady Bulldogs were knotted at 45-all to start the final quarter.
 
Bowie State held small leads early in the fourth quarter but a Mercedes Tapia (Virginia Beach, Va.) 3-pointer at the 5:34 mark of the final stanza shifted the advantage back over to the Hawks for good.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (2/6), hosting the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lady Lions at 2 p.m. in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena as part of a conference doubleheader with the men's team.
