Winston-Salem State Slips Past Bowie State Softball 3-0

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs (8-10, 4-2 CIAA) closed out the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round Up with a 3-0 setback against the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams (16-13, 5-1 CIAA) on Sunday (3/20) afternoon.
 
The Lady Rams held Bowie State scoreless in spite of allowing six hits. The Lady Rams made the most of their batting efforts as they scored all three runs on just five hits in the game. Katherine Zimmer went one-for-two at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Melissa Carrillo went one-for-three with an RBI and Destiny Snipes went one-for-two with a run scored as well.
 
Winston-Salem State broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning when Snipes scored on a Bowie State passed ball to put the team ahead, 1-0. Carillo added an RBI single to center field in the fifth inning that scored Zimmer. Finally, the Lady Rams closed out their scoring effort when Zimmer hit an RBI single of her own to center field to score Anna Marino.
 
WSSU pitcher Mercedes Hargett (10-8) took the pitching win when she went all seven innings with no runs allowed on just six hits. She also finished the game with nine strikeouts and just two walks.
 
Freshman Jaelyn Belt (Glen Burnie, Md.) led Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits in four at bats. Seniors Caitlin O'Neill (Elkton, Md.) and Danielle Watt (St. Leonard, Md.) along with sophomores Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) and Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) added one hit each in the loss. Ray (4-6) took the loss in the circle, allowing five hits and struck out three.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday (3/22), hosting their home opener against Millersville in a non-conference doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
